The first heroine of the Hotung community, Dr Irene Cheng née Hotung (1904-2007), was the fifth daughter of our founder, |
Sir Robert Hotung. As early as 1947, Sir Robert already intended to start a secondary school for girls, but sadly the plan |
encountered one problem after another. Luckily, Dr Irene Cheng joined the then Department of Education in 1948 as a school |
inspector, and thanks to her zealous advocacy, our school finally came into being in 1953. In addition, before her retirement from |
the department in 1961, she had been keeping a watchful eye on our development and offering as much assistance as she could to |
ensure that the school would grow and thrive, thereby bringing into reality her father’s vision. |

Another heroine of the Hotung community, our Founding Principal Mrs Kitty Cheung (1912-2013), was also a member of the |
Hotung family as Sir Robert was her grand-uncle. From the fact that Sir Robert insisted on her being given the position of |
Principal at the very start, we can infer the huge amount of confidence that he had in her. Actually, it is no exaggeration to say that |
Mrs Cheung is the biggest blessing of Hotung Secondary School. Not only did she cherish lofty ideals and possess extraordinary |
foresight but she also had the courage and fortitude to think outside the box and try new ideas. During her 14-year tenure, she |
successfully transformed our institution into a well-known English-medium girls’ school, which offered both practical business |
subjects and a rich, wide-ranging curriculum. And with our school’s growing popularity with local parents, enrollment had |
jumped from 205 in 1953 to 553 in 1961, the year of her retirement. |
